My marked HBAR AR-15A2, bought in '90, has serial number SP 248XXX. Lower has standard pins, no mag release fence and no sear block. Bayonet lug was milled off as this was back when the 'Assault Weapons' brouhaha was going on, so Colt attempted to 'de-assault' their rifles.didn't work.
Alrite, this has been on my mind for a while and hopefully the AR aficionados out here can clear a few things up for me. A year and a half ago I picked up an AR15 from a local shop. I wanted to get a Colt because someone told me that was what the US brand is. The only colt they had was an M4 style which was cool by me. However this model was the 'LE' model and has something like 'military use or export only' etched into the side of the lower.

I ended up getting it, of course, for a few hundred cheaper than he asked but my question becomes: 'Is there really anything special or collectible about this rifle?' I have not done any mods to it rather than adding a C-more red dot sight for fear that it may lower the collectability/value of the weapon.
The AWB started in Sep. 13, 1994 up to Sep. 12, 2004 so we shall call Colt AR that were made during that time are post ban, all that are made before the start of the ban up to 1964 are pre ban, I posted a link below of serial number reference of most Colt models pre ban and post ban (but not all - the list is not complete). When the ban sunsetted on Sep. 13, 2004 we could just call those AR no ban. There are some pre ban Colt models AR that are not desirable in my own opinion like the ones with protruding sear blocks on the lower receivers, they started doing that around 1990 up to about 1994, also most of those have the half moon bolt carrier where the lower rear of the carriers was all machined off. Also less desirable are the large size 0.170' diameter hammer and trigger pins which started about 1989-1990 up to the mid 2009, before those since the start of the SP1 in 1964 and after mid 2009 the hammer and trigger pins are the small mil-spec size of 0.154', to me the small fire control group pins are more desirable because some aftermarket match triggers cost less than with the large pin sizes, also all other non Colt brands uses the standard small pins.
Most Match Target series AR are post ban that started on 1994 after the ban law was adopted, early ones had the lower receiver sear blocks but early in the ban era they changed it with an un-machined web above and in front of the selector of the lower receiver, until current production there is still the un-machined web which is mandated by the BATFE regulations. After the ban expired in 2004 all the restricted law enforcement models with law enforcement restriction markings on the right side lower receivers mag well, flash suppressors, bayonet lugs, carbine collapsible buttstocks, and high capacity magazines and drum magazines were all legal to buy and own. Any particular Colt model you're interested in, standard government profile barrel rifles, HBAR rifles, lightweight carbines, M4 carbines, or HBAR carbines? Here's a link of Colt pre ban and post ban serial numbers. Thank you for the great information. Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk The info that I stated about pivot pin, hammer and trigger pins, and markings are in general usually the way it is but there are always exceptions with Colt. Between 1989 and 1994 when the factory was changing the sizes of the pivot pins and hammer-trigger pins they also released some rare small number of odd combinations.
Like rare lower receivers that have small size pivot pins with small size hammer & trigger pins, there are some that have large pivot pins with large hammer & trigger pins. Starting the beginning of the assault weapons ban in 1994 up to about 2011 some rare Law Enforcement lowers does not have the LE restricted markings on the right side. During the end of last year they released a batch of LE6920 carbines roll marked 'Colt's Law Enforcement Carbine' with LE restricted markings on the right side of the lower receivers, the last of these LE restricted marked carbines officially ended in around 2012 which the last 100 units included certificates from the factory that they were the last 100 units with LE markings. Also with the same model some are marked 'Colt Mfg. Some are marked 'Colt Defense' at the left side rear area of the lower receivers, they have no consistency. The info that I stated about pivot pin, hammer and trigger pins, and markings are in general usually the way it is but there are always exceptions with Colt.
